Vitamin B9 or Folic Acid, also known as folacin and folate is necessary for the metabolism of RNA and DNA. Recent studies indicate that it can prevent some types of cancer and birth defects and it is helpful in the treatment of heart disease.
Role in the Body
Folic Acid is essential for the growth and division of bodycells including nerve cells, and is needed for the utilization of sugar and amino acids. Folic Acid, in combination with Vitamin B12, is essential for the formation, maturation and multiplication of red blood cells. Folic Acid is the single most important nutrient for a pregnant woman and her developing foetus. It builds up resistance to infections in infants. It is also essential for genetic code transmission

Green vegetables, carrots, yeasts, liver, whole grains, egg yolk, melons, pulses and legumes such as Bengal gram and green gram are rich in Folic Acid.
Deficiency Symptoms
Deficiency of Folic Acid causes anaemia, weakness, lethargy and fatigue. It may lead to spina bifida.
Healing and Therapeutic Properties
Large doses of Folic Acid have been found beneficial in the treatment of mental retardation. It is also recommended during pregnancy to prevent spina bifida and also has proved beneficial in the treatment of recurrent abortions. Deficiency of Folic Acid, associated with Vitamin B12 deficiency, causes darkish brown spotty pigmentation that normally appear on the face, inner mouth, over the thighs, and on the palms.
Toxocity
Folic Acid if taken in large doses can cause neurological problems. Do not take if you suspect B12 deficiency anemia.
